Introduction

The year is 2024, and New Balance marks its 10th anniversary since its Fresh Foam launch. This has undoubtedly been the hallmark of the brand’s success, providing unparalleled comfort and performance that sets their running shoes apart in the industry. To celebrate this milestone, New Balance has released the Fresh Foam X Balos, a versatile, up-tempo daily trainer that offers comfort, style, and energy return. While the shoe is not going to be available until August, some of the notable features you can expect are a lightweight and breathable upper, a responsive Fresh Foam X PEBA blend foam in the midsole, and a much softer EVA-based outsole. Combined, these features certainly guarantee a cushioned, lively ride whether you are logging miles on paved roads or embarking on light trails.

New Balance Fresh Foam X Balos Upper Design and Fitting

NB Fresh Foam X Balos Upper

At first glance, the upper of the Fresh Foam X Balos is mesmerizingly gorgeous. I love the sleek and stylish look coupled with the wonderful colorways. As for the upper material, it is made from a lightweight engineered mesh that has sufficient air holes and eyelets to enhance breathability. The classic “N” logo sits on the side of the shoe, with the gusseted tongue also bearing the NB logo and the “Balos” inscription. The upper is not as stretchy as in other versions and therefore the fit might be a bit too snug for my liking, as I have a predominantly high instep.

The Balos has a thin gusseted tongue that is lightly padded ensuring that it remains in position while on runs. On the contrary, the heel collar is well-padded, guaranteeing maximum comfort and securing the foot in place. The shoe also features a traditional lacing system for a secure and customizable fit. The toe box also appears roomy in this version, seeing that the shoe has been widened in the forefoot and heel.

New Balance Fresh Foam X Balos Midsole Design andPerformance

NB Fresh Foam X Balos Midsole

The midsole of the Fresh Foam X Balos is a work of art, from its rockered profile to its flared sidewalls. By incorporating Fresh Foam X PEBA blend, it has been carefully designed to offer maximum cushioning and responsiveness for an energetic ride. Fresh Foam X is plush, and in versions like the Fresh Foam X more V5, I enjoyed how marshmallowy it felt underfoot while still being stable.  In the Fresh Foam X Balos, we are certainly going to be treated to a softer, springier ride due to the PEBA infusion.

While highly cushioned shoes may tend to miss the mark on stability, the Balos guarantees more support for your feet from its sole flare and widened base. It also has a low heel drop of 6mm (32.5mm in the forefoot and 38.5mm in the heel). It weighs 206g (7.3oz) for the women's version and 260g (9.2oz) for the men's. Being this lightweight, it would be ideal for tempo runs as well as long runs.

Fresh Foam X Balos Outsole

The outsole of the Balos is unique, as it uses a softer EVA compound and minimal rubber. In fact, rubber has only been used on a small part of the heel and very sparingly at the forefoot. Since EVA is much softer than rubber, it would not be unusual to see signs of wear within a couple of runs.

Ride

The PEBA-blend Fresh Form X midsole offers protection, softness, and responsiveness. The pronounced rocker shape also ensures a smooth heel-to-toe transition with an energetic underfoot feel, making this shoe suitable for long runs, tempo runs, and daily training. Still, the Fresh Foam X is not the fastest shoe, but the bouncy energy return is enough to offer a quicker pace.

Besides the ground-contact EVA outsole, strategically placed abrasive rubbers enhance adaptability and grip during the run. Therefore, Balos Fresh Foam X is a must-add rotation shoe for every runner.

Why You Should Buy

It suits an intermediate runner who wants to rack more miles since this shoe combines performance and comfort. Fresh Foam Balos is also lightweight and combined with a breathable upper, which makes longer runs comfortable. Also, the soft cushioning is protected by robust rubber in critical areas, offering traction across surfaces. Therefore, New Balance Fresh Foam X Balos is versatile.

If you are looking for a versatile daily trainer that you can wear for your tempo runs, during walks, and even at the gym, then the New Balance Fresh Foam X Balos is ideal for you.

Why You Should Not Buy

It is quite expensive. If you are looking for a daily trainer that is pocket-friendly, then the New Balance 680 V8 would be perfect for you.
