New Balance Fresh Foam 680 v7 is a budget-friendly daily running shoe that is comfortable, stable, and solid. The upper design has sufficient cushioning, which combines well with the dual-density midsole to offer cushioning and protection when running. The upper also has striking stylish looks. The Fresh Foam 680v7 is not a fast shoe because it is less responsive and rides firmly. It can also be heavy for some runners but is suitable as a daily training shoe.
Besides, it is versatile. Unfortunately, the sizing is inaccurate because the pair runs small on regular sizes. Thus, it requires going one size up to get the correct fitting.
New Balance 680v7 Upper Design and Fitting
The upper component of Fresh Foam 680v7 comprises a relatively thin engineered mesh material and inner lining that offer comfort, freshness, and protection. There are perforations in the toe box and the sides of the shoe and spaces in the right places, but it is not the most breathable shoe on the market. The New Balance logo on both sides gives the upper structure and style. The upper mesh takes the foot's shape without hindrance. There is a snug midfoot hold.
I find the lacing system of New Balance Fresh Foam 680v7 simple and functionally excellent. It utilized the braided fastening system. Also, they are somewhat old-school and aren't flexible, but I found them long enough.
The wide non-gusseted tongue and the collar are generously padded. The broad tongue wraps around the foot so it doesn't slip sideways when running.
New Balance 680v7 has a toe box that runs wide, allowing natural splaying of the toes. The deployed toe bumper protects the toes, and the overlays across the toe area give the toe box structure and ensure the mesh doesn't rub aggressively against the toes. The heel counter is also rigid but not restrictive. It holds the heel in place with no issues to report.
Overall the upper has a comfortable fitting at one size up, protective and stylish for casual wear.
New Balance Fresh Foam 680v7 Midsole Design and Performance
The Fresh Foam 860v7 running shoe has dual-density midsole foam comprising the Fresh Foam and EVA foams. Thus, it is exceptionally comfortable and feels nice and squishy during the run but not too soft. The combination of squishiness results from squishy Fresh Foam foam in the upper layer with firmer and thicker EVA foam in the bottom layer.
The positioning of the firmer foam in the bottom layer makes the New Balance Fresh Foam 680 v7 less responsive and unsuitable for sharp-speed bursts. It is slightly complaint whenever I switch up the pace. But substantial energy return and guaranteed comfort make it perfect for regular training, whereby I deploy a variety of exercises, including moderate to high speed, 3k runs, and gym training. Besides, the Fresh Foam 680v7 is relatively heavy for speed runs. Instead, I use the Skechers Go Run Excess 2 and Adidas Adizero Adios 7 for uptempo runs.
Performance is the most significant takeaway. This shoe rides well at moderate speed. The tapering forefoot makes transitioning seamless and overall stability is exceptional.
Freshn Foam 680 v7's outsole is grippy except on extremely wet and smooth surfaces. They hold up well and are durable. I have experienced minor wear at 102 miles. But I am sure the outsole design can't handle trails and rocky conditions due to the exposed midsole foam. Hence, I choose my running path carefully to keep my pair of Fresh Foam 680 v7 in good condition.
Who Should Buy New Balance Fresh Foam 680 v7?
New Balance 680v7 suits runners looking for an under $150 daily training shoe that can take a lot of mileage.
It also fits someone with wide or extra wide feet. Besides having a roomy toe box, the Fresh Foam 680v7 comes in various sizes, including wide and extra-wide options.
A new Balance fan looking for neutral casual wear will be happy with New Balance Fresh Foam 680 v7.
Verdict
The Fresh Foam 680v7 is far from a super shoe. It lacks the fancy features but is okay to run in because it is solid as a daily trainer, especially if you want to rack weekly miles. It is comfortable and protective despite a lack of significant responsiveness. Hence it cannot provide an enjoyable ride over a long-distance run. However, its reliability and durability as a daily trainer guarantee value for money. Finally, it can be all-day casual wear for those who don't need supporting shoes.
