I can’t miss mentioning Nike Waffle Debut on the list of exceptional running shoes with a price tag under $100. Besides the pricing, the Waffle’s most selling points are the retro design, outstanding comfort, performance, and durability. It is a lifestyle and a running shoe whose origin can be traced back to the 1970s. It is famous for its unique looks, especially the waffle machine pattern outsole that is ever ready to devour the ground.
Nike Waffle Debut Upper Design and Fitting
Nike Waffle Debut holds up to the saying that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The upper looks simple yet sophisticated. The nylon, suede, and big Nike Swoosh logo make up the upper layer. The nylon material forms the base, while the suede overlays cover the toe and back areas. The Swoosh logo extends all around, including forming a strap on the back of the shoe, creating a 3D look and amplifying the retro styling.
The Waffle Debut has a retro tongue design, and the heel collar is adequately padded. There is also a removable EVA insole for enhanced comfort. The fitting is true-to-size with a roomy toe box for my quite slim feet. However, I recommend those with somewhat large feet to go at least half size up.
Overall, the upper material is nothing close to the flyknit, but it looks standard and not cheap. It brings out the retro style.
Nike Waffle Debut Sole Unit Design and Performance
The simple upper also sits on a simple sole unit. The midsole is concocted with an EVE foam. The midsole foam has quite a significant amount of stack height but with negligible heel drop to ensure stability and comfort. The EVA foam is nothing close to the ZoomX midsole foam but is adequate for this type of shoe. It is not too firm but well cushioned for all-wearing.
The outsole has robust rubber with a waffle design. The grip is outstanding across various terrains.
The Waffle Debut is not compliant considering the EVA foam. However, it gets the job done when subjected to easy short runs or workouts in the gym. Besides, it is lightweight.
Most importantly, the Nike Waffle Debut is primarily a lifestyle shoe for all-day casual wear, just like the New Balance 847v4. Therefore, you get to enjoy it as casual wear rather than a daily running shoe. It matches well with khakis, jeans, traveler pants, or sweatpants.
Overall, the Waffle Debut is a quality shoe with a beautiful appearance, especially if you choose the weight colorway. Don’t mind the extra troubles of cleaning white sneakers in the summer. While the synthetic upper material is easy to clean, as usual, the suede needs time to clean.

Take Away
The Waffle Debut has a timeless design. I see it as a piece of art. Though old school, it is still cool and perfect as everyday wear for putting in a few weekly running miles and gym workouts.
